In the heart of the English countryside there are few more scenic places to play a round of golf than in Northumberland.

For both amateurs and professionals, Northumberland has become one of the United Kingdom’s favoured golfing counties. It has many courses, all diverse in scenery and style of game. Alnmouth’s Foxton Golf Club is the fourth oldest in England, founded in 1869.
It is a links course, as are many in the region, since the oldest kind of course was first developed in neighbouring Scotland. Goswick, close to Berwick-on-Tweed, is similarly renowned for its century-old links course.

Bamburgh Golf Course is considered one the most exceptional experiences a player is likely to have. From the first hole you are in the midst of spectacular coastal scenery as well as the famous castle named after the village. Other castles can also be seen from the course. Also in the northern part of the county are the courses in and around the North Pennines, a UNESCO European and Global Geopark which is home to rolling hills, waterfalls and expansive, verdant moorlands.
A serious competitor might prefer a day out at one of Northumberland’s championship courses. Slaley Hall in Hexam, an award winning Hotel and Golf resort, has an 18-hole course which is included in the PGA European Tour. Longhirst Gold Club offers an expansive America style game on its open-plan landscaped areas of play.
The courses of this historic and treasured county are too numerous to mention, but you can be sure that there is one for every day out. With so many of them attached to castles, hotels or near some exceptional bed and breakfasts, it is a rare marriage of scenic beauty, challenging play and convenience, not to mention the many welcoming nineteenth-holes. From tee-off to the nineteenth hole, you can expect the golf courses of Northumberland to bring something unforgettable to any day out.
