Set in the natural splendour of historic countryside, Northumberland holds some of the United Kingdom’s best fishing lakes and river. Bamburgh, in the district of Berwick-on-Tweed, is exceptionally well placed close to the River Tweed which has become a world renowned spot for anglers and fly fishermen looking to catch sea trout and salmon.

Fishing in River Tweed For three consecutive years, more Atlantic Salmon have been caught in the River Tweed than any other river thought the European Union. The River Till, a tributary of the Tweed, meets at Berwick, also with a plenitude of salmon and trout.

To the west of Bamburgh, in the Cheviot Hills, the River Aln flows through the picturesque landscape of the Northumberland National Park down to Alnwick where it meets the sea. Alnwick is also the site of the famous Castle which played such a significant role in the region’s past.

Apart from being one of the most historical and pleasing places to cast a line, it is also famous for its bounty of Brown Salmon. For more Brown Salmon, it’s just a little further south until you come upon the Wansbeck, just beyond another historical town, Morpeth.

For the Coarse Fisherman, why not take your rod and reel just South of National Park to the River Tyne, where a wealth of species are to be found, of which perch, grayling, pike and eel are just a few.

If you’d rather not stray that far or are a true fly fisherman, then close to the North Pennines, a registered Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there are some marvellous trout lakes. The lakes of the nearby Kielder Water & Forest Park are also favoured for their many trout.

A gentle three miles from Bamburgh is the town of Seahouses, a popular embarkation point for people visiting the Farne Islands. Sea fishing charters operate from the harbour and a day out offers the added benefit of being around some of the country’s most dramatic coastline.

All considered, whether you’re an experienced fisherman or just want to drop a line in the water and while away the day, there are few areas in Britain where you’re likely to find the number of fish or the splendid surrounds.
